TOP TEN REASONS TO LIVE IN PALM BEACH

Jetsetters from all over the globe have visited our special little gem of an island for decades. The tall, manicured hedges that line our beautifully landscaped thoroughfares provide sanctuary to some of industry's top leaders, entertainment's most popular performers as well as international diplomats and presidents of the United States. That said, Palm Beach also provides an incredible backdrop for those searching to live an amazing lifestyle year-round as well. My family and I have resided in Palm Beach for decades now and over dinner the other night we created the David Letterman Top Ten List of why we love living on the Island. So...from my family's perspective--and we are all different ages and embrace different interests--here are the results.

PALM BEACH'S MAGNIFICENT HOMES AND GARDENS

Number 5. Behind the tall hedges are some of the planet's most magnificent homes and gardens. Pick up a copy of Florida Home or Architectural Digest and nine times out of ten you will see a lush spread featuring a well-appointed Palm Beach property. Our tiny village of Palm Beach boasts a relatively small inventory of incredibly luxurious home choices and architecturally designed properties up and down the island. Our committed government leaders and citizens put strict zoning ordinances in place years ago to protect the integrity of our housing stock and aesthetics associated within our neighborhoods. On the island you'll find everything from enormous, gated trophy estates to seaside cottages...chic oceanfront condominiums to historic mid-size Mediterranean-inspired family dwellings. Tropical gardens, privacy hedges, enchanting loggias and crystal clear swimming pools all serve to set the stage for fabulous parties and gracious entertaining.
There's a lot you need to know about Palm Beach real estate before jumping into the market, like riparian rights and land elevation for instance. We can guide you in the absolute right direction so you can identify a property that meets sound criteria while at the same time fulfills your dreams. Palm Beach real estate is a proven investment and was pretty well insulated during the recent economic downturn. That said, there's still a lot of opportunities out there to buy right and we know where they are.

SHOP TIL YOU DROP IN PALM BEACH

Number 6. Shop Til You Drop on the Avenue, in the Vias, or on Antique Row Ask any concierge at the Breakers, Chesterfield or Colony where to shop and they will immediately point you to one of the nation's most exclusive retail destinations, Palm Beach's Worth Avenue. Anchored with a stunning Neiman Marcus and glamorous Saks, Worth Avenue continues to entice the well-heeled shopper to fabulous stores like Hermes, Chanel, Valentino, Gucci, Escada, Ferragamo, Tiffany's, Louis Vuitton and Stubbs & Woonton.
The adorable Mizner-designed vias off Worth contain unusual, locally-owned boutiques, galleries and eateries. Venture across the Middle Bridge and you'll find CityPlace, a lifestyle center where Williams-Sonoma, Pottery Barn, Restoration Hardware and Anthropologie call home among Muvico, Cheesecake Factory and the Improv Comedy Club. During our top ten list discussion, my son put in a vote for the kitschy galleries and antique shops along Dixie Highway between Southern Boulevard and Forest Hill. So many treasures; so little time

EASY AIRPORT ACCESSIBILITY MAKES PALM BEACH A QUICK COMMUTE

Number 6. Accessibility to NYC, Philly, Boston, DC, Montreal Toronto, and other cool destinations. Palm Beach International Airport makes life soooo much easier than having to schlep to Miami or Fort Lauderdale to get in and out of town. PBI has dozens of direct flights daily to most major cities in the northeast United States. My sister lives in Manhattan and we often joke that PB is a suburb of the City because it's just a quick two hour flight straight into LaGuardia--easier than taking the Long Island Expressway out to the Hamptons in the summer! It's just as easy to fly to a connecting hub when traveling to Europe, South America and Asia. Clean, convenient and just a 15 minute drive from the Island, PBI also offers elite, professional accommodations to manage private jets and charters as well.

PALM BEACH-THE BEST IN TENNIS, GOLF AND WATERSPORTS

Number 7. If you're a sports fan like me, then Palm Beach is the perfect place for a most active lifestyle. A fantastic place to raise a family, my son participated in most every sport from lacrosse and soccer to tennis and golf, to wake boarding and kite surfing. He was certified in Scuba by the age of 10 for goodness sake! What a wholesome and healthy way to live, no matter what your age--and all year long!! I love to play tennis and compete in the Ladies Tennis League (I play for South Olive--a shout out to my friends there) so I have the pleasure of hitting ground strokes and short volleys on some of America's finest Har-Tru courts. Seaview and Phipps Park, both town facilities, are simply divine and the pros there are friendly.
Both were renovated recently and I submit they are nicer than the ones I play on at the private clubs in town. As for golf--the Breakers course is really hard to beat. Challenging and so lushly landscaped, it's always a treat to take an out of town guest there for a stunning day where nature, sport and camaraderie meet. The Par Three Course down on South Ocean Boulevard was also injected with life when the Town invested a substantial amount of money to renovate it. You can't beat the vista and briny breeze that comes off the ocean there. Sublime. Across the lake is another little gem in West Palm Beach called Bear Lakes.
The Bear Lakes Country Club attracts golfers from Palm Beach because of its convenient location and choice of two Jack Nicklaus designed courses--one being called the Lakes Course, the other called the Links. There are many more golf course homes available in the Bear Lakes CC neighborhood than in Palm Beach proper--and the neighborhood has lovely amenities and a relatively low HOA fee structure, making it an affordable choice for say, someone who commutes during the season.

PALM BEACH POLO-AMERICA'S EQUESTRIAN CAPITAL

Number 8. Just a few miles west of Palm Beach lies one of the Equestrian capitals of the World--Wellington, home of the Palm Beach Polo scene. There are several planned developments in that neighborhood that cater specifically to families who simply love the sport. Don't be surprised to run into Tommy Lee Jones, Bruce Springsteen or have a Madonna sighting during the season. They and their families take residence in Wellington during the winter to enjoy jumping, dressage and spirited polo competition. You'll never run out of trails to ride or miss time to train...as there are thousands of well-appointed properties to either rent or purchase in that vicinity, with more being added annually. Choose from a plethora of gated communities to selection of over-the-top self-contained farms with trails, stables and guesthouses.
It's perhaps one of our county's fastest growing communities and as the international equine enthusiasts continue to shine its spotlight on Palm Beach Polo, it will continue to grow. If you're looking to lease or purchase a luxury home in Wellington please call or email us and we will help you find your dream home!

PALM BEACH HAS A FUN AND DIVERSE POPULATION

Number 9: Palm Beach has a Diverse Population and Fun Stuff to Do! Whether you're into the arts, sporting events, gallery hopping, beach and water sports, golf, tennis...whatever!! Palm Beach and its surrounding communities have just about anything you're looking to do and fun people to did it with! Salsa lessons, Clematis by Night, Gala events at Mar-a-Lago, Pride Fest, the list goes on and on. Our community hosts world-class events like Ferrari Weekend at the Breakers, and the Palm Beach International Fine Art and Jewelry Show to campier events like the always popular Delray Affair and Annual Garlic Festival. We have a tremendous amount of active churches, synagogues, charitable organizations and community centers that host all kinds of events year round for children and families alike.
We have some lovely historic neighborhoods that border our village like Northwood where you can find adorable antique shops, cupcake bakeries and my favorite, a stained glass art studio where I take classes on mosaic design. A simple glance in the Shiny Sheet or Palm Beach Post will help you set a fun-filled itinerary that leaves very little time for boredom!

PALM BEACH HAS A RICH AND VARIED HISTORY

Number 10. Unlike most beach communities in South Florida, Palm Beach has an incredibly rich history thanks to Standard Oil industrialist Henry Morrison Flagler. A visionary with tremendous assets at his disposal, Mr. Flagler brought the railroad which subsequently developed a brand new market for tourism in what was originally the buggy swamplands of Florida. His peers, looking for adventure and an escape to the bitter winters up north, followed suit, building opulent homes with a Mediterranean flair here along our turquoise beaches.
Whether you're a local or a visitor, take an hour or two and tour the Flagler Museum on Cocoanut Row. This grand manse will dazzle you--it's especially spectacular during the holidays. Mr. Flagler built this amazing home at the turn of the century as a wedding gift for his bride, Mary Lily Kenan. Their original railcar, also open for tours, is parked in all its splendor, along the loggia facing the intracoastal.
